Risks & Hazards explained.

If you’ve done your Hazard Perception test recently or are prepping for it now, you should know exactly what a hazard is. Basically it’s anything that may cause a driver to change speed, direction, stop, or even cause harm. HazardHero will score you based on how quickly you identify each hazard - the faster you click, the more points you’ll get. Miss a hazard or click too late and points will be dedicated from your score.

Risks, on the other hand, are behaviours that increase the likelihood that a hazard will cause harm. They can also increase the severity of harm in the event of a collision. Typically, hazards are external things we need to look out for and risks are things we do ourselves - like driving too fast or getting distracted.

Did you know that for newly qualified drivers, the risk of a collision doubles the moment a passenger gets in the car? That’s one to remember!

What happened here? A true Hazard Hero would know. Test your skills and knowledge to see if you measure up.

5 TOP TIPS TO MAXIMISE YOUR SCORE

tap quick, tap once.

The quicker you tap when a hazard or risk appears, the more points you get. But remember, tap when there isn’t one, and you’ll lose points. So if you notice we’re exceeding the speed limit, tap quick - but don’t tap again. There’s only one opportunity to tap for each risk/hazard. Don’t worry though, there will be another one along soon!

eye scan - everywhere.

Here’s a crazy fact - the frontal lobe of our brains doesn’t fully develop until we’re about 25 years old. And the frontal lobe is the part of our brain that helps with emotional regulation, impulse control and eye scanning. So young drivers need to practice eye scanning to stay safe - looking far ahead, in the mirrors, checking the speedo and in the cockpit too - making sure passengers don’t become distractions.

Remember that in real life, hazards don’t appear like in an arcade game. Just becuase you’ve not needed to tap for 40 seconds, doesn’t mean there isn’t a deadly hazard right around the next bend. So keep your wits about you!

make it to the house party.

We can only record your score if you make it all the way to the house party. If you’re a pro, then HazardHero will take about 10 minutes to complete, so make sure you have enough time before you start.

remember the risks as well hazards.

Risks are behaviours that increase the likelihood that a hazard will cause harm. Typically, hazards are external things we need to look out for, like people on bikes, whereas risks are often things we do ourselves - like driving too fast or getting distracted. For young drivers without much experience, taking risks really dial-up the danger - so beware!

don’t give up.

HazardHero isn’t supposed to be easy because being a great driver isn’t easy. Getting where you’re headed safely and comfortably is what your friends really want, even if they pretend otherwise. To show how hard it can be to keep your cool under pressure, there are four hazards that might catch you out and send you back to the start. If that happens, don’t give up - becoming a skilful driver takes time and practice. Try again and use the opportunity to see if you can boost your score.

Oh, and if you really want to win the voucher, keep trying! As long as you register each attempt with the same email address (using the form above), we’ll keep recording your highest score.
